Apply for K-ETA when traveling to South Korea

The application process takes a certain amount of time.
Please complete the procedures at least three days before your departure.

Since September 2021, electronic travel authorization "K-ETA" is required to enter South Korea.

K-ETA is an electronic travel authorization system for travelers entering South Korea for short-term tourism or business purposes without obtaining a visa. It officially began operation on September 1, 2021. The South Korean Ministry of Justice and airlines recommend applying at least 72 hours prior to departure. Since applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 64, please complete the procedures for all members of your family or group when traveling together.

As part of its tourism industry revitalization support plan, the South Korean government is temporarily exempting travelers from 22 countries and regions from obtaining K-ETA starting April 1, 2023. However, K-ETA is still required for those who wish to skip filling out the entry card. While some countries are exempt, K-ETA will be required for travel to South Korea starting in 2026.

*Embassies do not accept inquiries regarding K-ETA.

What is K-ETA?

K-ETA is an electronic travel authorization required for short-term travel to South Korea. Until now, citizens of countries and regions exempt from obtaining a short-term visit visa could enter South Korea with only their passport, but since September 2021, advance application for K-ETA has become mandatory. The official name is “Korea Electronic Travel Authorization.”
Citizens of countries eligible for visa-free travel to South Korea must obtain K-ETA regardless of age, and those who have not applied in advance will not be able to board flights or ships. K-ETA exempts travelers from obtaining a visa if they meet certain requirements, such as the purpose of travel and length of stay, and generally allows for a maximum stay of 90 days. While it can be obtained more quickly than a visa, the South Korean Ministry of Justice recommends applying at least three days before departure.

Important Notes for K-ETA Applications

The K-ETA electronic travel authorization offers a simpler process than a visa and can be applied for using a PC, smartphone, or tablet. After application, the Ministry of Justice of Korea reviews the application and notifies the applicant within approximately 72 hours of either “Travel Authorization Granted,” “Conditional Travel Authorization Granted,” or “Travel Authorization Denied.” The K-ETA is valid for three years from the date of issuance (two years for applications submitted before July 3, 2023). However, if your passport expires within the 3-year validity period, your K-ETA will also expire on the same day, requiring a new application. Applicants who receive a “Travel Authorization Denied” result may reapply, but there are limits on the number of applications. If you are denied travel authorization three or more times within a 180-day period, you will be ineligible to reapply for 180 days from the date of the first denial notification.
If traveling to Korea without using K-ETA, a visa must be obtained at the Embassy or Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Japan. Visa processing takes approximately 2-3 weeks from application to issuance, and multiple documents must be submitted in advance.
